So That Nobody Has To Go To School If They Don't Want To by Roger Sipher

A decline in standardized test scores is but the most recent indicator that American education is in trouble.

One reason for the crisis is that present mandatory-attendance laws force many to attend school who have no wish to be there. Such children have little desire to learn and are so antagonistic to school that neither they nor more highly motivated students receive the quality education that is the birthright of every American.

The solution to this problem is simple: Abolish compulsory-attendance laws and allow only those who are committed to getting an education to attend.

This will not end public education. Contrary to conventional belief, legislators enacted compulsory-attendance laws to legalize what already existed. William Landes and Lewis Solomon, economists, found little evidence that mandatory-attendance laws increased the number of children in school. They found, too, that school systems have never effectively enforced such laws, usually because of the expense involved.

There is no contradiction between the assertion that compulsory attendance has had little effect on the number of children attending school and the argument that repeal would be a positive step toward improving education. Most parents want a high school education for their children. Unfortunately, compulsory attendance hampers the ability of public school officials to enforce legitimate educational and disciplinary policies and thereby make the education a good one.

Private schools have no such problem. They can fail or dismiss students, knowing such students can attend public school. Without compulsory attendance, public schools would be freer to oust students whose academic or personal behavior undermines the educational mission of the institution.

Has not the noble experiment of a formal education for everyone failed? While we pay homage to the homily, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink," we have pretended it is not true in education.

Ask high school teachers if recalcitrant students learn anything of value. Ask teachers if these students do any homework. Quite the contrary, these students know they will be passed from grade to grade until they are old enough to quit or until, as is more likely, they receive a high school diploma. At the point when students could legally quit, most choose to remain since they know they are likely to be allowed to graduate whether they do acceptable work or not.

Abolition of archaic attendance laws would produce enormous dividends.

First, it would alert everyone that school is a serious place where one goes to learn. Schools are neither day-care centers nor indoor street corners. Young people who resist learning should stay away; indeed, an end to compulsory schooling would require them to stay away.

Second, students opposed to learning would not be able to pollute the educational atmosphere for those who want to learn. Teachers could stop policing recalcitrant students and start educating.

Third, grades would show what they are supposed to: how well a student is learning. Parents could again read report cards and know if their children were making progress.

Fourth, public esteem for schools would increase. People would stop regarding them as way stations for adolescents and start thinking of them as institutions for educating America's youth.

Fifth, elementary schools would change because students would find out early they had better learn something or risk flunking out later. Elementary teachers would no longer have to pass their failures on to junior high and high school.

Sixth, the cost of enforcing compulsory education would be eliminated. Despite enforcement efforts, nearly 15 percent of the school-age children in our largest cities are almost permanently absent from school.

Communities could use these savings to support institutions to deal with young people not in school. If, in the long run, these institutions prove more costly, at least we would not confuse their mission with that of schools.

Schools should be for education. At present, they are only tangentially so. They have attempted to serve an all-encompassing social function, trying to be all things to all people. In the process they have failed miserably at what they were originally formed to accomplish.

Summary

The article by Roger Sipher suggest that kids go to school in order to get a better education. And if their parents put them in school is because they want a career for their kids.In my opinion Roger Sipher is right because if you want to be someone in life you got to go to school to be someone important.I know it’s hard always going to school 5 days a week, but I do it because I want to succeed in life and I want my family to be proud of me as well.According to the artcile school is for kids who want to learn and not for kids who just go to school to messes around and distract others from their education. They think playing around is gonna take them somewhere, but that’s not how life works for people.

According to Roger Sipher, “Abolish compulsory-attendance laws and allow only those who are committed to getting an education to attend.” This means that he thinks that no one should be made to go to school , and only let the ones that one to go to school go. It is stated Roger Sipher,” Has not the noble experiment of a formal education for everyone failed? While we pay homage to the homily, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink," we have pretended it is not true in education.” This means that just because some one is made to go to school it doesn’t mean that they will work and take advantage of it,and we that people is just wasting money .

We can’t make students go to school but they should go to school to get a good job in the future. Overtime there been high school dropouts. The dropouts earn far less, go to prison far more often are far more likely to be poor. On average of dropout costs 71,000over their life time. Now that is a lot of money to pay. According to Roger Sphere he says (Has not the noble experiment of a formal education for everyone failed? People should be made to go to school do to the fact that staying in school and of cores getting good grades. But you also must see that students that made to go to school end dropping out when there in accurate age ,that would be a waist of money and of time that the students are wasting but if the student does get good inspiration they might end up doing there best in school

The article “So That Nobody Has To Go To School If They Don’t Want To” by Roger Sipher talks about his reasoning that he believes that students shouldn’t have to go to school by force but by choice. Roger Sipher states that “One reason for the crisis is that present mandatory attendance laws force many to attend school who have no wish to be there.” He says that this eras teens have issues being forced to school and they don’t choose to go because they don’t like being forced to do things. This is because they feel like they should be able to have the freedom to choose if they want their education or not.

According to Rodger Sipher he thinks that why should we (school board) force kids in the united states to go to school if they don’t want to? I feel that the school borad should force the students to go to school because it will be hard for them to make a living without an education. But the author feels that students opposed to learning would not be able to pollute the educational atmosphere for those who want to learn. Educations are important because most jobs/ careers are taking high school and college degrees .,etc. furthermore if you have a higher education you will make a lot of money. Also staying in school helps people stay off the streets and stay out of trouble. That’s why the school board should force students to go to school.

Some students would rather go work a job than go to school because their parents wouldn’t really care so they would probably think they shouldn’t care.

This summary talk’s about, how students shouldn’t have to go to school if they don’t want to.

According to Roger Sipher, students that don’t want to go to school shouldn’t have to.
Roger believes that’s those who are committed to getting an education should be there only. The Compulsory-attendance law has been in public schools for a very long time, and he believes that this should be abolished.
He feels that student shouldn’t be pushed; because there are students who really want to learn, but more attention is shown to the people who don’t want to be in school.
Roger Sipher says “You can lead a horse to water, but you cant make him drink.” Which mean don’t make a student go to school if they don’t want to go.

Nobody has to go to school if they don’t want to
According to Roger Silpher he believes that nobody should go to school if they don’t want to be there . Roger states that legislators should ‘’abolish compulsory attendance laws only those who are committed to getting an education’’. This debate has been going on for a long time across the nation. The reason why they make you go to school is because it’s a law to have children in school legally until the age of 17. What roger is trying to say is why make them go if they aren’t going to commit to it . ‘’you can lead the horse to the water but you cant make them drink’’. So basically what this means is you can lead someone in a certain direction in this case children to school but you cannot make the child learn . this has been going on with public schools and also private schools.

According to a short article “so that nobody has to go to school if they don’t want to” by Roger Sipher, it stated that there should abolish compulsory-attendance law and allow only those who are committed to getting an education to attend. Why, is because “the present mandatory-attendance laws force many to attend school who have no wish to be there. Such children have little desire to learn and are so antagonistic to school that neither they nor more highly motivated students receive the quality education that is the birthright of every American” said too by Roger Sipher. According to Roger Sipher, High school students are choosing not to show up to school. And when they do they don’t do the material or any homework, because they choose not to, the reason for this is because they aren’t motivated enough to stay in school or even like having an education. This is happening around the entire nation.

So that nobody has to go to school if they don’t want to
5 w’s , who, what, when, and why
Why do you think most students don’t have a desire of going to school ?
There are many students all around the world that don’t wish to be at school. And is some parts around the world there are children that wish to go to school but don’t ever get an education. That is why we should keep the law to that all minors stay in school until they graduate from high school. In the passage Roger Sipher says “ to abolish compulsory – attendance laws and allow only those who are committed to getting an education to attend”. This problem is taking up all around the United States and I say it should be stopped as soon as possible. This problem has been around for many years and its time for a change. In order for this to happen parents need to be a little more responsible and make sure there kids are at school and the school should have security at all exits of the school so the students don’t leave the school.

This article is based on the fact that students do not desire to attend school. According to Roger Sipher if you force kids to attend school it will have no use because they are just going to waist their time and take time away from other students to learn something new every day. On the other hand private schools have no worries about failing or dismissing students because they know the students have a chance to attend a public school. I agree with this article because it states that schools are a place to go learn and not a day care center

The law forces students to go school who do not desire to be there and those students make it difficult for others to learn; so therefore, the standardized test scores are declining. According to Roger Sipher, he clearly states in the article that if you force a child to go to school, you can not force them to learn and they will depart from school the first chance they get, anyhow.

I didn’t want to tell her anything because I’m not the type of person who starts problems, but then I just exploded out of nowhere. I solve this problem by learning to let go. I learn to let go because I recognize that fighting was not the right way to handle things and I recognize that she just wanted me to get mad, but this is not going to happen again because my education is more important.
